Indoor prawn farming is starting to take off in the UK, and it’s gaining serious attention from across the seafood industry. Instead of relying on long‑distance imports, new facilities are using closed, tank-based systems to grow king prawns on British farmland. These systems offer tight control over water quality, feed, temperature, and welfare — removing many of the environmental and biosecurity challenges linked to imported prawns.

The big headline is sustainability. By producing prawns locally, the UK can massively cut the carbon footprint linked to transporting seafood from overseas. There’s also the benefit of transparency — customers increasingly want to know how and where their seafood is produced, and indoor farming makes that much easier to demonstrate.

For processors, distributors, and chefs, this development could be a game‑changer. Shorter supply chains mean fresher product, lower risk of delays, and more stability around pricing and availability.

At Highland Farms, we’re watching this closely. While it’s early days, indoor prawn farming has real potential to complement the UK seafood landscape and could offer new opportunities for businesses seeking fresher, more localised supply.
