A note from our Founder

“I was born on a small sheep farm in Penruddock, a farming community near Penrith in Cumbria. I still remember the thrill of pulling beautiful fish from the water – and the extra excitement of trying to stay one step ahead of the river bailiff. Even then, I knew salmon was precious and should never be wasted.

I soon taught myself to cure and smoke fish, just as people had done for centuries, and when I left school at fifteen and a half, it felt natural to turn my passion into a small business. In 1984, a friend and I applied for a £12,000 new enterprise grant from Margaret Thatcher’s government and opened Grants in Maryport.

I learned the finer art of smoking from Master Smoker Roy Martin of Gretna and we started out in a tiny premises with no money, not much idea about business, but a boatload of determination. We smoked and hand-sliced every fish ourselves before delivering them to local hotels. Fish by fish, mile by mile, we built the business. And, forty years later, here we are.”
